Acer are a Taiwanese hardware and electronics company, whose headquarters are located in Xizhi, New Taipei City, Taiwan. Founded in 1976 in Hsinchu City, Taiwan by Stan Shih, and a group of six others, Acer was originally known as Multitech. Multitech initially produced the Micro-Professor MPF-I training kit, then two Apple II clones; the Microprofessor II and III before diversifying by joining the new IBM PC market, and quickly becoming a prominent PC manufacturer. Multitech was renamed Acer in 1987. Acer’s low overheads result in their product range offering exceptional value when compared to many of their bigger manufacturer rivals’ products. This has resulted in their dramatic growth – from being in the top 15 of PC manufacturers in the early nineties to surpassing many of their rivals, including Dell, to become the world’s number 2 PC manufacturer (in terms of sales), in late 2009. Acer now own controlling interests in Packard Bell, Gateway Inc, and eMachines.
