Toshiba Satellite U920T-108 Review

The Toshiba Satellite U920t-108 is a strange hybrid of a machine - part tablet part ultrabook, which in turn is essentially a more portable laptop.  Toshiba bill this item as an ultrabook that converts into a tablet (rather than vice versa), and features a 12.5" screen, Intel's Core i3 3217U 1.7GHz processor, a 128GB SSD and 4GB RAM, all running Windows 8.  So who is this aimed at?  Read on for our Toshiba Satellite U920t-108 Review.

Below is our review of the Toshiba Satellite U920T-108, a 12.5" laptop, featuring 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD hard drive and Windows 8.

Priced at between £800 and £100 depending on where you shop is this creation from Toshiba - the Satellite U920t-108.  Half ultrabook, and half tablet, it's very much a niche product aimed at a market that in all honesty we're not sure exists.  The price tag suggests it should have the power of a high end laptop or ultrabook, which unfortunately it doesn't.  As a tablet, it has a large screen (12.5" instead of the standard 7" or 10") but is considerably more expensive than the vast majority of high end tablet rivals.  So this leaves you with a relatively low specification ultrabook / tablet hybrid, at a price that could have bought you a half decent laptop as well as a pretty good tablet, which in our eyes at least would be somewhat more preferable.  If you have a family then it's unlikely you're going to let your children play with this device, due to the overall cost, and as such this leaves you with a not hugely powerful computer that will primarily used by adults.

Anyway, asides from being mystified about who this product is aimed at, we will take a look at the specification:

The 12.5" screen features touch screen capabilities (enabling you to use it in tablet mode) and offers a decent picture.  Unfortunately when in laptop mode, it will show finger print marks left over from when using the touch screen - so might need a quick dust down before completing any work.

The actual specification of the laptop is fairly poor considering the overall cost -  an Intel Core i3 - 3217U 1.7GHz processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD for storage.  Windows loads pretty fast due to the SSD, but in terms of specification you can get faster laptops for considerably less money.

In terms of external connections, Toshiba have fitted HDMI output as well as two USB 3.0 ports, and a multi card reader and headphones 3.5mm jack.

The touch pad and keyboard were both easy to use, and overall build construction is pretty good - none of our testers had any issues here.

So overall what do we think of this hybrid device?  And who exactly is it aimed at?

Toshiba Satellite U920T-108 Pros and Cons

Pros:

Decent build quality, fun to use.

Cons:

Pretty expensive for what it is.  A solution to a problem that in our eyes doesn't actually exist.

Our Verdict for the Toshiba Satellite U920T-108

If you're after a slightly unusual laptop / tablet combination for general web surfing usage around the house, then this may tick that box.  However it's pretty expensive for what it is - personally we'd buy a laptop and a tablet and use them separately - you'll get a faster and thus more practical laptop, as well as a tablet which as it costs less, you'll be less worried about accidently breaking.
